“Food photography is much harder than it looks like.”

I already know how to use light, reflectors and gobos, but I struggle with styling and composition. It’s difficult to make everything look natural and convey a mood of sitting together at the table. Often it looks staged.

I recommend the workshop because of the information as well as the hands-on aspect. Ariel, Valeria and Michelle actually work in the industry, which gave me the chance to ask certain questions.

They knew what they talked about and offered lots of support. On top of suggestions and tips, they gave guidance and help. I learned how to use props and how to build a set.

“Up until now, I’ve been pretty much ignoring backgrounds and props.”

But today, I got a better idea of what should be around the food when I photograph it. For example how to implement dish towels in my set up.

I also liked to learn about colours and cropping, but most importantly, the workshop helped me to operate my camera better. This was a big help because I get so frustrated when I misinterpret the camera. And I’ve learned about the best lenses to shoot food or the essentials to have in my travel photo bag.

I surely recommend the workshop. It’s great for food bloggers and I enjoyed being part of it.

“Because I wasn’t taking good pictures, I dismissed food photography as something I didn’t do very well.”

Before, I tried to take pictures of what I cooked at home. But because I wasn’t taking very good ones, I didn’t really feel inspired. So I dismissed food photography as something I didn’t do very well.

When the workshop was anounced with its reasonable price, I thought I’d learn it. Other photography workshops are really expensive. Some cost $700 a day and they just leave you to do your stuff with a critique afterwards.

But after today, I feel confident. It was hands-on and everyone helped, with comments, encouragement and inspiration.

“The workshop gave me direction.”

I have been studying photography since two years, but I still wasn’t clear on how to set a mood with food. It’s all about the emotional, the intangible. So what exactly am I looking for? How do I get ideas?

The workshop has helped me a lot with that and I feel a lot more confident. They didn’t talk about light ratios or f-stops: as a photographer, you don’t need to learn that.

Instead, they taught me to think first of what I want to convey. Should my picture be mysterious, moody or dark? Or festive and happy? I got a lot of ideas, whis takes the stress away from me.
